Original Medicare, paired with a Medigap policy, lets you see any doctor who accepts Medicare nationwide (subject to the provider’s participation). Most Medicare Advantage plans work differently: they contract with networks of doctors, hospitals, and other facilities. Non-emergency care outside that network can mean higher costs or no coverage at all, depending on plan type (HMO, PPO, etc.).
Networks are not frozen in place. Carriers renegotiate contracts, providers leave plans, and online directories can lag reality. That is why a quick network check belongs on your pre–Open Enrollment list every fall—whether you live in Idaho, Oregon, Texas, Washington, or anywhere else Advantage is sold in your county.
Three-step network check
- List who matters. Primary care, specialists you see regularly, your hospital of choice, and any facilities for planned care (therapy, dialysis, etc.).
- Search official tools. Use Medicare.gov Plan Finder for the plan year you are shopping, and cross-check the plan’s own provider directory on the carrier website.
- Call the office. Ask whether the doctor still expects to participate in that plan for January 1. Reception staff often know before a website updates.
Read your Annual Notice of Change
If you stay in the same Advantage plan, your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) should arrive by September 30. Look for network and cost-sharing changes—not just the premium. A plan that fit this year may not fit next year if a key specialist drops out.
When to compare other plans
- A must-see doctor or hospital is out of network for next year.
- Referrals or prior authorization rules get tighter for your conditions.
- You split time between two states and need clarity on out-of-area coverage.
- You are weighing a return to Original Medicare plus Medigap—different rules, different network story.
Annual Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7 for most Medicare Advantage and Part D changes. Doing nothing usually means accepting the plan’s new terms for January 1.
